Timing gauge?

Does anyone know if there is a readily available device that could be used as a "timing" gauge? I feel fairly confident with the analog gauges I already have, that I can keep things in a reasonably safe range...except for timing. I know TST et. al. offer adjustable timing, but this doesn't indicate the actual timing seen by the engine.

It seems one of the major causes of engine failure is too much timing/fueling together...and then comes blown head gaskets, melted pistons, etc. So many variables exist when it comes to stacking boxes, that this quickly becomes a problem. I know Smarty adds timing, and TST does as well; add in a roktech sensor or tone ring mod, etc...and pretty soon you have no idea what the "total" timing is.

Here at work, I have played around some and referenced existing cam/crank signals to a current probe on an injector wire. Using an oscilloscope, you can see commanded current to the injector, and get the actual timing with respect to TDC, and the length of duration for the injector you are probing.

Is there anything already in production that will accomplish this?

Thanks, Eric
