Geno's lift pump kit

Anyone know why the kit from Geno's comes with an inline simple filter but the stock system doesn't? Do these pumps fail from ingesting debris from the fuel/tank?

Seems like one more restriction to me on an already marginal fuel lift pump... which I bought as a spare. However, when the time comes to replace, I want to ensure I do the right thing and either install the filter or not.
