2004 In-Tank Fuel Transfer Pump

A week ago I posted for a friend asking if anyone had experienced an erratic fuel gauge in the instrument cluster of a Gen III truck.

A friend of mine who is still transporting RVs has a 2004 Dodge-Cummins with 360,000 miles and it recently developed a problem with an erratic fuel gauge. I suspected a bad fuel level sensor in the tank and posted for him. One poster agreed it was probably the sender. No one reported experiencing the same problem.

I e-mailed my friend and told him my best guess was the sensor/sender in his fuel tank.

He called again today and said he contacted his local Dodge dealer and bought a fuel tank sender. He took it to a friend at a local independent repair shop and had it up on a lift today to drop the tank and replace the sender. He said he and his mechanic discovered the fuel sender doesn't fit his application.

He said Dodge retrofitted his fuel transfer pump several years ago under warranty replacing the engine mounted transfer pump with an in-tank pump. When they dropped the tank today they discovered that with the in-tank fuel transfer pump the tank level sender and the transfer pump are all part of one unit and the sender is not replaceable without replacing the transfer pump.

He asked me to post again for him asking if anyone can confirm that the fuel tank sender for an engine mounted transfer pump is different than the sender for a truck with in-tank transfer pump.

Has anyone had any experience with this?
