48RE tranny rebuild tips

What can I have the local tranny shop do to my tranny to beef it up and make it last longer. I took it to him today and he said second is where the problem is. Showed me some fine metal on the magnet and said this is the metal 2 is made of. Am I getting BS'd?? Second was slipping but my question is WHY did it go bad?? If we dont know that then how do we keep it from happening again?? What upgrades can I get local joe to do? It is a very reputable business, been around fpr 32+ years. I think that shows something... What do you think?
