Transmission temp

I have a 2006 with the 48RE auto. I installed temp gauge (Isspro) and everything worked well until this past weekend. I noticed that the temp would jump up to 250 degrees and then back down to 150 160 range, then a little while it would jump again to a high temp and then back down again. Has any body else had this problem? I was thinking a short in a wire but upon inspection I could not see any problem. I check the line temp with a info red thermometer and it was not reading high. Do I have a bad sender or converter box?
