04 2500HD - Auto Trans won't reverse

Not sure what happened. No indication of problem before. I pulled into a coffee shop. Came out to leave and "no reverse". I was able to pull out in drive and get where I was going. Then coming back, I down shifted coming down a steep grade and "no down shift" either. Engine just went down to idle and no compression braking.

All I get when I put it in reverse is a hesitation, then nothing. Engine revs, but no go. I can go forward through the gears. If I put it in drive, it goes through all gears. I can hit the tow switch and it shifts out of OD.

I changed the filter to see if there was any debris in the pan. Only thing unusual was a small metal piece that looks kinda like a fan tooth. (1/8 inch by 3/4 or so.) The doughnut magnet just had the usual load of fine particles. Nothing unusual for 90,000 miles.

Transmission shops are no help. They just want to rebuild the thing. That solves all the problems and lines there cash drawer well.

Any suggestions? Could this be bands or solenoid or something. I have never torn into a Dodge transmission before.
