A lot of black smoke

I now have 37,700 miles on my 07 6.7 and for the past few hundred miles it has been puffing black smoke when I accelerate to pass or climb a hill. I am now out of warranty of course. Is it possible that the truck is stuck in regen mode???? I don't have a pyro, so I can't tell when it regens. Until now I have never noticed any smoke. Has anyone had this problem?????????
