Regeneration Question

I was heading down the freeway this morning and noticed the mileage on the vehicle information center was reading 13 and less mpg's even after a reset of the mpg's. I kept that up for at least 15 miles and on the way home on the same freeway I reset the mpg's and the mileage climbed to over 20 and almost 21. Was this a regeneration or what and if so why did it take so long?
Also is their some indication other than low mpg's that a regen is occuring?
My truck has the G30 recall done with the AV flash?
Inquiring minds want to know.
