Current gear display

In my truck, when I switch to manual control on the transmission the gear that I have selected stays displayed even as the transmission downshifts to 1st gear. For instance, I put it into 4 and it will go no higher than 4 but 4 continues to be displayed all the way down to a stop.

My wife's Chrysler 300C displays the current gear as it downshifts and you have to upshift when starting to accelerate again. Does everyone's 68RFE work like mine?
