Bad fuel, dealer said entire sys needs replaced!

The truck is a 2009 Megacab with just short of 6000 miles on it. No mods of anykind.
Apperantly I got a large ammount of water and rust in the tank Friday around noon at the 70/76 merge on the PA trunpike (breezewood). The truck never showed any codes and never lost any power, I still was getting low 12's when it went into "limp mode", still no codes. shut it down and restarted the DPF full showed.

How is it possable that a $50,000 truck would not shut down when a designated ammount of water was detected or even show a code for water in fuel?

What should be replaced? Flush it and try to run it or will I expect to have issues for the rest of my life?

I think one of the TDR member Dodge dealer diesel techs has posted recently that the only fix is a HPCR pump and injectors. I don't think there are any shortcuts.

Call your insurance company and report the problem, save a sample of the fuel, record dates, names and addresses, and all documentation.

just dont know why a 2 stage prefilter with recirculating winter heated element or a tank heating pad isnt standard to prevent gelling during winter months it works for volvo arctic package has a 12 volt element built in.

50 or 60 thousand dollar truck and its not there from the factory guess they would rather sell parts and warranty labor??

This Racor diesel filter is brand new in the box. It removes 99% of water in your fuel and comes with a low restriction heat exchanger installed inside the unit that can use engine coolant or return fuel lines to heat the incoming fuel up to 90 degrees in one pass! i want one for my truck to prevent these problems also. Seeing we are not supposed to put additives in to tank. we dont even have #1 diesel here in central texas but a bullit proof prefilter setup would increase filter interval changes on the primary filter.

This setup works for every line hauler in the world it should fit the dodge too !!!

got a pic of the Mopar unit ? which thread is it under ? will it fit a 08? will the mod void the warranty on a earlier model ? is there a install or plumbing kit ? replacement filter part numbers and pricing ?

No, I didn't save it but it was a sag2 thread started perhaps four to six weeks ago right here in the ISB6.7 forum. I don't think he posted pictures but my feeble memory suggests someone else added a photo to sag2's thread. Or maybe I saw a photo on the Cummins sight? I'm sorry I don't have any better info but I'm almost certain a basic search under sag2's forum name will quickly locate it.

The best part about the Mopar kit is that it'll preserve your warranty being a factory initiated part,plus it should help us pass the bs emission tests coming up. Airdog's got a CARB# but not Dodge's blessing. On our trip to Oregon via 101 and 1, I was amazed at how many stations had diesel. I only had to add fuel at one small town's station. Other than that,Chevron's,Shell's,76's were abundant as were diesel pickups.

just because you got some bad fuel, doesnt mean it wiped out the fuel system, what comes out of your water separator, if you didnt drive it long you might be able to just clean the tank and replace the filters and start with clean fresh fuel.

I'm not sufficiently experienced with Dodge parts catalogs to understand the information provided.

I'd like to e-mail my favorite parts woman, "K" @ MOPAR4LESS, for a price on the severe duty fuel filtration kit for my truck.

Would you tell me what I need for a complete installation?

My truck is a 3500 drw 4x2 quad cab and chassis with 60" cab to axle and 163.5" wheelbase.

The way I read the chart this is the one I want:

They have been talking about it for a long time and the TSB is finally out. TSB 14-003-09 gives all the details.
Fits all 2004-2009 trucks and Chassis Cab. Includes lift pump and remote mounted filter. Have not seen it yet but is should be a well engineered set up.

DISCUSSION:

Several fuel system add-on or retrofit parts are available to enhance the filtering capability for customers exposing their vehicles to extremely dirty conditions or contaminated fuel dispensor pump filters or storage tanks.

Description of parts available for Cummins diesel equipped vehicles are listed below:
· 5.9L & 6.7L Water stripping, frame mounted filter kit. This kit includes the following: revised lift pump, lines, heater, water in fuel (WIF) sensor, and instructions.
· 6.7L up-graded (5 micron) fuel filter to retrofit earlier models (shell and element).
· 6.7L Element only, fuel filter.
· 5.9L & 6.7L Add-on or up-graded fuel tank vent hose kit with vent cap.
NOTE: Several parts will be added to this bulletin when they are available. The bulletin will be revised when they become available. These parts include a Filter with Bracket assembly which will replace the cap on the fuel tank vents for all the above vehicles, a 5 micron fuel filter for 5.9 engines and an improved air filter for 5.9 engines.
NOTE: The maintenance intervals for the fuel filters (engine mounted filter and chassis mounted severe duty fuel filtration kit filter) maintain a 15,000 mile service requirement for both


5.9 /6.7 LONGEVITY AND DEPENDABILITY PRODUCT ISSUES:

WHY DOES MY DIESEL NEED BETTER FUEL FILTRATION?

The 5-7 micron particles that pass thru your factory fuel filter are abrasive at the 23-26 thousand PSI range.

The end result is injector failure due to high fuel return rates causing loss of power and long crank times. One set of injectors could buy a pallet of these filter kits!
The factory water separator is a gravity type, water settles to the bottom of diesel.

The problem being the factory fuel pump location is before the separator so the contamination/water is mixed with the fuel as it is drawn up the fuel straw through the pump vanes from the tank and is in suspension as it hits the primary filter can! .

Industrial Diesel apps. have multiple filter/separators and is a suction type setup to prevent this issue dodge does not.

The effectiveness of the factory separator isn’t enough to protect your engine investment or injection components from water contamination failure claims. Water/Fuel contamination causes rust, the end result being failed injectors, cross over tubes, fuel rail and if its bad enough, injection pumps etc.

Warranty will not cover fuel contamination! Guess we cannot buy "Big 3, "Certified" Refined Pure Clean Diesel Fuel " ? YET at the pump ????

Just a slight oversight on the manufacturers part at the purchasers expense.

how do the automotive attorneys push for a chrysler recall and update for the TSB retrofit kit on their nickel? seems llike a production omission and a pre filter should have come with all 6.7 's from the factory as standard equipment.

All diesel 2010 models will have this part preinstalled,according to my service manager.



I would like a picture of this new severe filter setup to look at soon.

Notifying his insurance company is fine.......but shouldn't the actual claim be filed with the selling station that dispensed the poor quality fuel?????

A friend of mine in the Milford, KY area received a tank of contaminated fuel.....the claim was filed, the Dodge dealer performed the work, and the selling station's insurance company paid the claim......a tad over $16k dollars if I remember correctly.

We just get a copy of that form for our glovebox and a lawyers card to present as needed.

I just wanted a reliable $ 50,000.00+ truck to drive ,Maybe i was dreaming.
