Research being carried out by IBM in the field of solar energy has seen a breakthrough that allows a significant increase in the power generated from a single solar cell. That breakthrough sees a 1 cm x 1 cm cell able to produce 70 watts of usable power. Up until now the average power generation from such a cell was just 20 watts.
The large increase in power generation was possible through the use of concentrator photovoltaics, which focuses more light on to a single cell therefore increasing the potential energy generation by as much as a factor of 10
