Waste oil laws

I was talking to a guy I work with, who also owns a bar. He is considering getting a frier at his bar and I told him to keep me in mind for the waste fry grease. He was telling me that by law a licensed company has to take the oil. Is there any truth to this? Is there any way around the law for him to give me the oil? Thanks in advance for any knowledge on this.
