Chevy 6.2 diesel vs. Cummins

I'm looking at a buying a 1991 crew cab chevy with 6.2 in it. I know with out a doubt how much better the cummins is but I'm contemplating driving the truck for a year or so before doing a swap. Is it the turd I've heard it is?Do they get decent gas mileage? When I do the swap, will I be able to us the 4L80 that's in it with the cummins and if so will the motor bolt right up to the trans and transfer case in the Locations they are in? How's that trans going to hold up to cummins?
