Crankshaft Speed/Tach Sensor

What kind of a signal does the crankshaft speed/tach signal sensor put out?

With the previous engine, I adapted a gasser's tachometer/speedo cluster and drove it with an Isspro adapter using 4 magnets to simulate a V8s 4 bangs per revolution.

I figure if the signal is about the same strength from the Dodge/Cummins sensor, I may be able to wire to a Dakota Digital convertor to feed the appropriate signal to my tach.
