Max rpm?

My '92 will pull pretty hard to about 2000 rpm, anything after that and all I'm doing is adding revs. I'm pretty sure the pump has been monkeyed with due to the copious amounts of black smoke under hard acceleration. My '97 will rev to 2700 lickety split. So... why won't my first gen? I see 19 to 22mpg, Good power loaded or empty, idles like a top. I've owned the truck like this for a few years now and figured I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth due to the good service it's delivered. The extra rpm with some power would be nice from time to time, though. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

My son just joined the Air Force. While he is away at boot camp I am trying to help him take care of some issues he has been having with his truck.

It is a 1993 W350, auto, 4x4 dually, 3.54 gears.

The transmission appears to be slipping in all forward gears. I initially thought it wasn't downshifting to first gear, but after driving it today for a greater distance and manually shifting it from a stop, I realized it is shifting through all the gears. Including overdrive. It will shudder from a dead stop and the engine revs pretty high in order to get up speed. There is no tachometer so I can't tell the rpm's.

Reverse appears to be normal. It doesn't feel like it slips at all.

The fluid is full.

I've been reading the different posts and can't find any that match exactly these sysmptoms.

I have not pulled and cleaned the TPS, though it doesn't sound as if it would help. Overdrive is working.

I have not had the transmission serviced or adjusted either, though just as soon as I can I intend to, if anyone thinks it might help. Or is replacing the trans a better idea?

Money will be a consideration since my boy is just starting his military career and won't have much for a while. And I'm not wealthy either. (just lost my business and my Dodge truck)

Any help is appreciated and I will attempt to do as much of this as I can, time, money, and knowledge permitting.

Thanks,

Hi, Trying to remove the starter from my 1993 W250, and wondered if anyone has some advice for removing the three 10mm spline head mounting bolts. The lower bolt looks like its impossible to get to. I do have a small 10mm spline wrench, but no spline socket set, since I have never before run into a spline head mounting bolt before. Any tips on removing these mounting bolts would be greatly appreciated!

Headlamp, (term used in shop manual) switch went out this week, (second one in 54K miles-NAPA). Had to move handle slightly in/out to make 'em work. When I went in to replace the switch I found the spade with the "H" had toasted/distorted on the plug side and spade sides#@$%!. Got 'er all back together everthing working except my warning buzzer for the 'key in the ignition' and 'headlamp swithch-on.' What could have caused this to happen? Should I be looking for more electrical trouble down the road. Thanks in advance for the experienced responses:D

New Brake and Fuel Lines on '91 W250

I just completed replacing all of the brake and fuel lines on my '91 W250 since one of the lines failed from rust and I wanted to share some of the things I learned in the process.

-I bought a set of brake lines from a vendor of reproduction steel lines. The vendor did not have a listing for a '91 so I purchased the set for a '90 that was listed in the catalog. The '90 set is an eight piece set for a truck without ABS, but since I was planning to bypass the ABS, I figured it would be close enough. All of the lines fit except for two, the left rear, which was too long and had to be bent to fit, and the right front. The right front was too short so I bought a straight piece of tubing and fabricated the right front to match the one I took off. I believe the differences were probably due to the fact that the pattern that was used for the new lines was a truck that was not equipped with 4500# axles, as mine is.

-New rubber brake hoses are available from NAPA (the front outers and the rear)and Advance Auto (front center).

-The rear bleeder screws were rounded off and it took a pair of straight jaw Vise Grips to remove them. New replacement screws are available from NAPA.

-I removed the fuel tank in order to access one of the brake lines and discovered that the both of the fuel lines were rusted. Both the supply and return lines are 5/16" steel. I bought a 25' roll of tubing from NAPA and bent the new lines to match the old ones.

-I replaced all of the rubber hoses with SAE30R9 that I bought from NAPA. WARNING, this hose cost $7.00 per foot. It is probably better, but my recommendation is to stay with 30R7 since my originals lasted for 18 years.

-The hoses at the sending unit on top of the fuel tank were in pretty bad shape but the ones at the engine looked o.k.

-The supply line from the tank to the engine is 5/16" from the tank to the engine compartment where it transitions to a 5/16" hose up to the lift pump. However, the return line is 5/16" steel up to the engine compartment but the connection on the engine is 1/4". To reduce from the 5/16" steel line to the 1/4" hose, Chrysler reduced the steel line by swaging it down to 1/4" at the engine end. I used a short piece of 5/16" hose and brass barbed hose fittings and a union to make the reduction to 1/4" hose.

-Since the fuel tank was removed, I decide to replace the fuel filter on the fuel pick-up. I was told by the Mopar parts guy that the original part number was superseded so I ordered the new one. The original filter looked like a nylon type screen material mounted in a plastic frame. The new filter had a paper looking element mounted in a metal frame. The new filter fit o.k. but I did not like the paper element. I checked the Cummins Filtration website and the catalog showed the new filter application to be for gas engines and was noted "Mexico Only". I decided to clean and re-use the old filter since it was not cloogged and otherwise looked o.k.

-Last but not least. The last time I towed with the truck it seemed to have lost performance compared to years earlier. I checked the obvious things, throttle travel, fuel filter, transmission kick-down etc., but all seemed normal. When I removed the fuel pick-up fassembly from the tank, I noticed that the vent was full of dirt so I cleaned the vent and blew air through it. When I re-installed everything and took the truck for test drive, the performance difference was incredible. I believe that the blocked vent was restricting fuel flow for quite some time.

Sorry for the length of the post but I wanted to share the information that I learned and I hope it may helpful to other members. Please feel free to contact me me if you have any specific questions or need additional information, such as part numbers.

I have a 1990 D350 that i have owned for about a year now. I have got some modifications on it like a cold air intake, 4in exhaust system, and a boost, EGT, and trans gauges. I have got a major problem with my lights on my truck. It has all started when i got the gauges installed. I have been burning up fuses left and right. When i put a new fuse in, it will burn out in about 30 seconds and there will be some smoke coming out from under the dash where the fuse box is. I have got about 27 light that i have on my switch and the switch that i have is a 50 amp switch. Also when i put in a new fuse in and turn the lights on the backend lights will not turn on but the front half will. So my friend and i think it mite be a short somewhere but we're not sure. So if you guys could give me some info on what you think i would appreciate it.

Thanks Nick

Window lift motor brushes

The drivers side window is getting really slow, and I suspect that the motor brushes need replacing. Anyone know of a source for OEM brushes or an aftermarket brush that will work.

Thanks for any help.

Coolant Pressure

I recently installed a new radiator, hoses, Cummins thermostat etc etc. I filled up the system and have ran it several times up to temp. Everything seems fine. Except even after sitting for a few days....the upper hose is still "solid" and I can't pinch it together when cold. And my overflow bottle level never moves.

I chose a 13psi Stant cap. I decided to try a 7psi cap and see what happened. When I remove the cap cold...I got a purge of coolant as if under a little pressure.

Is it possible I filled it completely full with no air whatsoever? I did this while it was warming up the first time...then I put the new cap on.

Kinda makes me think head gasket failure is causing pressure in the system. But I have no other indications of such a failure. Can pressure get in the system and yet no coolant backflowing into a cylinder?

This is a stock truck and shouldn't have a gasket failure. Boost has always been stock level.

Besides this issue, what cap should I be running? 7 or 13? Factory was 15 and was still on the truck when I did this work. I know the higher pressure gives a higher boil point...but I'm at elevation 520 and probably will never see anything too much different with this truck.

I got a 1st gen in the 2010 Calendar!!

I was able to get my local dealerships 1991 Indy 500 Official Tow Truck in the 2010 Calendar for April!! I was hoping this nice original and still "in-service" 1st Gen would make it.

They've owned it since it was released from official track duties at the 1991 Indianapolis 500 and still use it as their only tow truck. The dealership owner had connections to the track officials, yet had to also purchase 5 other track vehicles to get this as part of a deal. Those included a Viper Pace Car, a Stealth Pace Car (which was dropped at the last minute for the Viper prototype) and some Dakota official track pickup trucks.

This old girl still purrs and tows in the Fords and Chevys all day long!! And some other Dodges on occasion. :D

Its the only 1st gen represented in the full month pages. Long live the 1st gens!!
