Oil Dipstick

I don't know where this should be posted. But what or how does Cummins get that little "ball" brazed or welded on the end of their dipsticks? What is it? Do they drill a tiny hole before doing this?

Reason I ask is because I have to get this done on a CAT C7 engine dipstick. That thing is a BEAR to get back into the engine. Something in the tube or block hangs it up and it takes like 25 tries to get the thing to go in. It had a little complicated "roller" wheel on the end of it and that doesn't work. I took that off and just a plain end is the same or slightly easier.

I tried a cummins ISC dipstick and it goes in easily but is the wrong length. So I want to weld or braze a bead onto the cat stick. How do they get this done? I think that would be an accessory to me. Thats why I posted it here. :D

ARP stud install ?? on an 02.

OK, This is killing me.

After 6 years of saving up, I finally have a set of Source Automotive Twins, 4" exhaust, HTT 3pc Manifold, Jammer 3 Injectors, and ARP studs still sitting in my living room for coming up on 3 weeks now. :{

I knew leaving my job as a shop mechanic to a field service mechanic was going to bite me in the butt. I have yet to be able to have a weekend off, and be able to get my truck into the micro shop at work to do the install. Wish I knew someone with a big garage or shop with tools in the Denver area.

Anyhow...

I just want to make sure that I have the stud install procedure down correctly for when the stars align and I can get this done.

Presuming this picks up after the valve cover and rocker arm removal...
1. Remove head bolt #1 in the OEM sequence.
2. Clean out the bolt hole.
3. Lube ARP stud and thread it all the way down, then back off 1/2 turn.
4. Lube top of ARP stud, install washer, and thread nut all the way down, torque to 125#.
5. Repeat 1-5 for all 26 studs.

Now here is where I start to get fuzzy.

6. Reinstall rocker arms, set valve lash, install valve cover.
7. Start and run engine to operating temperature.
8. After engine cools down (6 hours to be safe) remove valve cover, etc, break loose and retorque nuts to 125# in the OEM sequence, reinstall removed items.

Do I need to bottom out the stud and back it off again after I break the nut loose? Am I supposed to break the nut loose?

9. Drive truck for a day or two w/o flogging it - READ drive like a Texan in Colorado during a snow storm.
10. W/O breaking loose the nuts, retorque nuts to 125 in OEM sequence.
11. Repeat 9-10, 2 more times.
12. Drive as normal.

Do I have this right? Missing a step? Close but not quite right?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Jim....
Thank you for the assistance with getting my pump sorted out.The gang at Antrim got me changed on Monday and it was a pleasure to see the fuel pressure gage pinned at 45psi where it should have been with the other pump. The difference in how the truck drives is amazing and I am amazed at how much quieter the replacement pump is than the old one.The truck pulls harder when you step on it now and is not lazy like it had been in the middle of the power-band.I am going to slide by Mid-Atlantic Diesel Performance and see if there is any difference on the jet now that we have pressure and I will let you know of the outcome.

I appreciate the help and a huge THANK YOU from me to both Andrew at Antrim and to you for getting this straightened up for me.........Andy

I had a Van Akken box on my 2001.5 for several years. However,
I hate to admit this, I do not know if the box adds fuel or advances
timing or both. Does anyone know how this box operates?

If someone knows I would appreciate your input. I am trying to
sell it and the potential buyer would like to know, and now so would

Smarty REVO - adjustments for mileage towing?

I tow at moderate weight, cross the scales at 20K. I have downloaded the Rev0 sw, and am looking for best ways to use it. Looking for fuel mileage while maintaining enough power to pull the hills and for passing. Has anyone done some tuning and know where to start from? I ran the comp on 3/3 when towing before the smarty, and averaged 11-12mpg. With the smarty I was running sw#4 and comp 3/2, haven't done any long hauls so don't really know the mileage with that combo.

What are others running on adjustments?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Need advice on where to buy ECM

~171,000 miles 2001.5 5 speed etc.

Just been advised by repair shop that I might have a failed ECM. Will know more in the morning after they say they will install a TEST ECM unit.

I'm dreading what the cost will be from the repair shop ( I will not mention shop name here). I will say that it is not a Dodge Dealer. I used the search tool but was unable to to get any good hits on where to buy on line. I was hoping by this post I can open Panders TDR box and be overwhelmed with suggestions.

Are ECM's being sold on line all re manufactured ? What suppliers I should look to and which to avoid?

Thanks in advance folks.
