really basic grease question

This crossed my mind last night as I was putting on my new (3rd in less than a yr) track bar. How much grease should a person put into a new part such as the track bar ball joint? I've always heard the phrase "shot of grease" and thought it implied a single pump of the grease gun handle but who knows....

While on the subject, how much should be put into each fitting when doing a routine grease of the entier truck?
