Cummins Engine History?

As a new owner I am currious about Cummins history and why they are such desired engines?

What other types of vehicles and/or machinery can you find the Dodge Cummins engines in?

What do all the A, B & C and Series Numbers mean (Cummins 5.9C4)?

Read an article today in Trailer Life that says "Fords new 6.0L Diesel is the king of Diesel horspower and unlike the HO Cummins it's 50 state legal".

Why isn't the HO Cummins legal in California?
