Cummins Distributors

Can someone explain how distributors fit into the picture of our Ram pickups? I don't have a lot of confidence in my two local dealers (I won't say stealers - they're more inept than dishonest anyway) but I do have a local Cummins distributor, who advertises as a a full service location, meaning parts and service. I'm thinking about using them for maintenance for the engine, ie., oil changes, etc.
