Cummins 8.3 bomb-ability

Hi, guys,
My friend is looking into building up an 8.3 for dragracing (I think its in an F800 - not sure if he's putting it in something else or not). I've also been considering picking one up for a project of my own.
Anyway, the engine is the mechanical 8.3 with the p-pump. Does the 8.3 respond to modifications in the same manner as a 5.9? Or are there things in particular to watch out for - i.e. any particular weaknesses?
Also, does anyone build performance trannies for 8.3's? I think it's got an Alli MD3060 behind it right now...
