Ford Brazilian 7.8 ?'s

Does anyone have any experience with the Ford Brazilian 7.8L's? A friend of mine has one and one day while driving it made a loud noise, he described it as a "backfire". Now it idles good but if you rev it up to 1200 rpm it smokes bad (white) smells like raw fuel, and shakes real bad, I was wondering if pump timing may be off, but dont know anything about these engines. If anyone has any experience with these or knows of any common problems please let me know. Thanks a lot.
