Muffler bearings?

So this guy I work with bought a new Powerstroke and is showing it off to everyone at the shop. After he starts it up I make a comment that it sounds like a ball bearing being swirled around in the bottom of a coffee can. After realizing that I'm right, he takes the truck back to the dealer on his lunch hour to find out whats wrong with it! I wish I could have stuck around for his return( I work in the field )and the answer.
It almost sounds like a air cooled VW,a blender full of nuts and bolts. SteveinAZ
