VW diesel repair question

A friend of mine's 17 year old brought his Rabbit over for me to repair oil leaks and figure out what happened to his fuel economy.The oil appears to be coming out the air-filter box,which by the way hasn't had a filter in it for 20k.I have a good idea what I'm going to tell him when returns to pick it up tomorrow,just wondered what you guys think.
