Chevy 6.5L Diesel uses 5W30 Dino Oil????

I'm the treasure for my vol. fire department. I was paying bills last night and looked at the bill for an oil changed performed on our 2002 Chevy Express passanger van with the 6.5L turbo diesel.

The invoice indicated that they used 5W30 (I'm assuming dino automobile oil as the price was $0.98/qtr). I called the service writer this morning and he said that 5W30 is fine for that engine.

Is that true? It seems a bit light and I suspect that it is a "S" type oil not a "C" type API oil.

This van sits in a heated bay, and is used to take FF's to classes and meetings (not much stand still idling like most apparatus) usually highway type miles.
