contaminated fuel?

what are some symptoms of contaminated fuel, other than not running.
my truck has been idling rough, like a missfire that gets worse at times or goes away completely at others, im pretty sure that its not the i/p i just rebuilt it a couple months ago and took it apart last week and found no problems inside, injectors are new, but could be messed up? but im leaning towards fuel as i got it from someone who has a refueling truck that gets used and filled regularly. what should i look for in the fuel if anything? power seems normal, just rough idle at times.
