8 Lug Magazine

OK I got weak and bought an issue of 8 lug magazine (every 3 months is along time to wait to read about diesel). In their article on changing a fuel filter it states "Under load, the exhaust temperature can be as hot as 14,000 degrees Farenheit." What are our engines made of?
