Need help with Ford diesel

My dad's 1993 Ford Diesel (pre-powerstroke non turbo) has given it up. It has lost compression. The truck has about 135,000 miles on it and is in really good shape cosmetically. Can anyone tell me about what it would be worth as is? He is not sure he wants to spend the money to fix it. In the alternative, can anyone tell me where to get an inexpensive drop in replacement engine? Any help you all can provide would be appreciated. The truck is located in southern Illinois, about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, MO.
