What is the history behind Dodge and CTD?

All you first genners out there... think back to a better time, namely July and August of 1988. Yup, almost 20 YEARS ago already. Does anyone remember what the buzz was like in the auto industry with the introduction of the Cummins into the 250 and 350 series pickups?? Did anyone have any idea how well the partnership would work? I understand that diesels in pickups were not new, Ford and Chevy already offered oil burners in their trucks, but they were V8's, ours was only a little 6 cylinder that could barely turn 160 hp.

Did anyone have any idea where we would be almost two decades later?
Who here bought a new one off the lot (or ordered) in late 1988? Cost?
