Angry California To Smog Check Diesels In 2010

Well, I was truly disappointed to find this out. While processing an online registration for my motorcycle I happened to check the "New laws for 2008" section of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Right there, second from the top was a reference to Diesel-Powered vehicles.

It said that diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after the 1997 model-year that have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,501 pounds would be in the biennial smog check program starting in 2010.

Not sure if this was proposed, or actually in place to happen, I wrote our Bureau of Automotive Repair who runs our smog check program and asked. They wrote back and said "The test that will be implemented in January of 2010 for diesel powered trucks will be a visual and an OBDII computer test only. There will be no tailpipe test." So, I guess that it is for real.

It would appear that they will be looking for catalytic converters as well as your on-board computer to see if you are running an after-market program or have flags showing that you have.

Such a shame as my truck gets 3 miles to the gallon extra in the city and on the highway running my Smarty Jr. than it did stock.
