silly question - On Semi's - what the heck is that PVC for?

Drove a lot of miles last week and kept seeing Semi trucks with a piece of PVC pipe less than 1" OD on the rear view mirror pointing up and down. I didn't see anything sticking out of the pipe but saw enough of them to think they serve a purpose.
silly question, but anybody know? My only guess was that it did something for the turbulence on the mirror...???
