Test drove a 03 6.0 PSD
I had the chance to drive a new 03 6.0 CC shorty 5sp Auto PSD today. This thing was very impressive for a stock truck. They sound almost identical to the current 7.3's at idle but slightly quieter on the road. I have driven several stock auto CTD's and DM/Allisons, and this 6.0 would outrun those in my opinion. While driving it I thought I would take off from a stop and mark how fast it would go in a measurable distance and then take my truck to the same spot and compare. Not very scientific but very interesting results. I was able to accelerate while on a on ramp to the interstate. From a dead stop I floored the accelerater and hit 62 mph at the first marker on the interstate. I then went back with a buddy in his 02 ETH. He has a comp as his only mod. Starting in 2nd and not skipping gears he hit 66mph on 5x5, 4mph faster then the 6.0. I took my 02 with 275's and comp on 3x5 and got to 70 mph, 8mph faster. I started in 2nd and shifted into 5th at 2800 rpm just before the marker. I think shifting into 5 th instead of running it higher cost me a couple mph. Comparing a stock truck against a mildly bombed CTD is not comparing apples to apples but I honestly did not think I could beat it after driving the 6.0. I did not have time to go back and try it with the comp off. Bottom line is they are no match for a bombed CTD(even a lowly 5sp like mine) until they get a chip out for it. Then it will be very tight race. I am going to try to get the dealer to let me try it with a boat or trailer and will post the results if they will go for it, but I doubt they will without putting a non-refundable $41,000 deposit down on it.
