Duramax heater.

Someone i know has a 2003 Duramax. I plugged in my truck last night and asked him if he has plugged his in yet.
His anwer was: he was told that it is not necessary to plug in the Duramax; as told to him by the dealer. The block heater turns on by itself; unknown at what temperature. Is that true?
