93 ford auto tranny question

Quick question for any of you tranny gurus. While riding in a friends ford the auto tranny gave out. Yes i know... its a ford but the same guy also owns a 24valve with a P-pump, so that makes up for it a little!! Coming out of a turn the tranny downshifts and bangs second gear and then nothing. No gears, no reverse but park still works. It felt like something snapped. I am guessing its not the output shaft because park still works. We just got done pulling the trans and from what i can see of the input shafts, look OK. Could something of broken inside the converter or does this sound like a shaft or something inside the trans itself has let go? Any info would be appreciated.
