Thumbs up fixed on the road

I know that there's already some threads with post-Muncie chatter, but I think this one really stands out and warrants some special attention. So, here goes.............

Well, the trip to Muncie was not without some unplanned happenings for me. On the first leg of the convoy back home we stopped in western PA for an overnight rest at a hotel. Upon taking the off-ramp and coming to a stop, I smelled raw diesel. At first, I was thinking there must have been a fuel spill nearby. Pulled into the hotel parking lot and still smelled it. Opened hood to find fuel dripping from the #4 injector line nut at the pump. Engine was running fine, so I didn't notice it on the highway. Underside of truck was all coated with diesel. Thought that the line may have loosened up, so I borrowed a wrench from Wheaties and tried to snug it up. It was not loose. As a suggestion from HoleshotHolset, I backed off the nut, more fuel leaked, engine started to miss. Tightened it back up, engine runs fine, but line is still leaking. So, this left two possibilities.....either the line is cracked or the DV holder had somehow cracked (the latter being very unlikely). At that point we called it a night.

The next day at breakfast, things started happening. At first I called up Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh to see if they had a line. They didn't have one. But they were gonna look to see if one was nearby and call back SmokinRam with the info. At one point, Massdiesel asked me if I could get the engine number and injector line number, so I just rattled off the engine number 44777513. He says "dude, you got problems" Had to go out to the truck to get the tag off the injector line though. It turned out that it would be at least 1-2 days to get a new line shipped in. So, more phone calls were made.

As it turned out, extrachoppy700, who was riding along with us at the time, had a buddy with a 1st gen '92 or '93 (can't remember exactly, but it had the same injector line) that was within an hour from our location. My truck was still drivable, so off we went. Wheaties and extrachoppy700 rode ahead and led the way. My buddy Dave and I followed in my truck hoping it didn't let go.

We arrived at the home of the donor truck. At this time, I don't know the name of the owner of this truck, but he's a very gracious fellow for letting me have a line off his truck. The only thing he asked is that his truck be running by friday. Wheaties provided all the tools needed for the job. He and extrachoppy700 wrenched on my truck as I wrenched on the donor truck to get the line off. When we got the line off my truck the only thing I could see that would cause a leak was a little burr on the ball at the end of the line. Don't know how it got there. Installed the donor line, bled the air out and fired it up. No leaks. It was at this point that I killed the engine, paused for a minute, let out a sigh of relief, and stared at the pump. Wheaties asked me what was going on. I tell him that there was just a huge reduction in pucker factor. Heck, I think I found some diamonds in my shorts after that. Finally, we install my line on the donor truck, button the trucks up and hammer on down out of there to catch up with the rest of the convoy. And wouldn't ya know it....no leaks on the donor truck with my line....WTF

My truck was just fine the rest of the trip home. Not one drop of diesel from the injector line. The donor truck is not going to be left as is, though. SmokinRam ordered in a new line and is going to make a trip out to the truck to fix it up proper.

I would like to extend my utmost gratitude to all those who helped me out with getting my truck back up. I never expected that so many different people, some whom I had never even met, would work together so quickly to lend me a hand. This was definitely a memorable trip. I hope I get the chance to return such a favor sometime down the road.

Cheers,
Sean Perry
