'05 DTC code

Was told by a local dealer that the cycling of the key off and on three times to get the P-code was not accurate. I did it on my dad's 1500 and i got the code P0404, looked it up and then called the dealership. BTW it's part of the EGR stuff. Asked them if I could bring it by after work for a quick look/check and was told that it'll take longer than a few minutes because "the codes that come up in the odometer are not accurate" Any ideas if this is close to correct?
