Hohn Runs for President!

Well, not yet anyway-- not until I'm 35 So, to get things started, here's some of the principles my campaign is based on. Keep in mind one absolute truth, you get more of the behavior you reward, and LESS of what you punish. Whether it's teen pregnancy, crime, welfare, whatever, this principle applies.

1) If slavery is wrong (and it is) then it's just as wrong to be a master as it is to be a slave. Therefore, it is just as wrong to benefit from discrimination as to suffer detriment. Thus, affirmative action, "hate crimes" legislation, and other things that give special status to a person or thing based on race, gender, religion, etc etc are to be terminated immediately. No preferences for any special group.

2) The only "fair share" tax is a flat tax. Effective immediately, the income tax code for individuals will be simplified to a basic 12% of what you made. It's not the role of gov't to give people who meet certain requirements (kids, blind relatives, disability, etc) any kind of special break. It's not the role of gov't to tell people how they have to live their lives in order to get preferential treatment under the tax code.

3) Now, the IRS can be eliminated and all those who consume tax dollars can go get real jobs contributing to GDP instead of spending it.

4) Abortion is wrong, plain and simple. It's ignorant to think that a fetus is anything but a baby. NO living thing naturally reproduces something OTHER than itself. Cherry trees make more cherry trees.

5) The gov't will NOT fund any kind of art or music programs, whether on NPR or anywhere else. If something can't sustain itself in the open market, then it's gone.

6) the SIZE of gov't will be reduced by at least a third. This is surprisingly easy to do once you get the gov't out of the busybody business.

7) Social Security will be privatized. None of this shell-game crap, either. Truly private. Yes, some people will get screwed. Guess what? It's inevitable because the first recipients benefited without having to pay in- that means that someone down the line is going to have to pay in without benefiting. If you are foolish (or unlucky enough) to be 100% dependent upon the gov't for your retirement, then private charity will have to support you. Which reminds me...

8) The government will get out of the charity business. The private sector is ALWAYS more efficient than the gov't. Witness the latest effort to have a private individual achieve space flight..

9) Let's talk about "rights". You don't have a right to healthcare. Nor to anything other than life (as you can make it on your own), liberty, and property. Every person and business has only a few things to offer: their time, their talent, or their property. They belong to them alone. If you, as a private citizen, can get them to give you some of their stuff for money, then fine.
The private market is just free people making economic agreements with other free people. You don't have a right to a doctor's time unless he agrees to give it to you. You don't have a right to medicine unless it's part of the agreement you have with a drug company.
So there's no "patient's bill of rights". The only bill of rights you need has already been written 200+ years ago.

10) Corporate welfare will end. NO more $181 BILLION handouts to ag corporations like ADM. NO more defense contractor handouts or the like, either.

11) Foreign aid will be eliminated. No more sending billions of dollars overseas to people who won't thank us and won't help themselves solve the problems they caused. This is because the gov't is no longer in the welfare game, remember? If something is so grievous as to demand big money, then the President will go on TV and talk about the crisis and ask for donations to be sent to a special account administered privately for the purpose of helping the people. The gov't should not use its police power to FORCE people to give money to the cause-du-jour.

12) All protectionist trade policies are gone-- no more tariffs on imports. Protectionism ultimately hurts the people it claims to help.

13) The minimum wage will be repealed. The gov't should not be meddling as a PRIVATE individual enters into an agreement with a PRIVATE corporation or company. Besides, the minimum wage leads to unemployment, and , like so many other gov't ideas, hurts the very people it claims to help.

14) The dept of education will be abolished. Education should be run entirely by the several states made to compete with each other. Local citizenry should establish curriculum based on what THEY want their kids to learn. This is consistent with the idea that a child's greatest educator is his parents. Note: this doesn't mean that it's the job of the educator to BE a parent! Your kids are in school to learn, not to be babysat!

I'm sure there's more, but this will at least get me started....

At this point, I'd like to open up the press conference for some questions.....

Justin
