why haven't everyone figured out what diesel owners have known for years?!

The powers that be in government and the auto industries have been preaching bigger and better things when talking about better gas mileage and alternate fuels. From my understanding, the have been saying the same things since Jimmer Carter, and not much has changed. Now i have a couple questions (or statements when finally written out)---1) why do they keep going to fuels that has a lower thermal efficiency that diesel fuel, because, the way i look at it is what good is a "cleaner" fuel when you burn more of it?!?! 2) (Not particularly diesel related) Lets look at something, what good is it turning in a perfectly good car/truck to be able to claim that you are a tree hugger? What do you think that used car dealer is going to do with that car, send it to the bone yard? No, they are going to sell it to someone else! Now I am all for someone buying a new car if they have the money and the want one, but buying one so you can claim to saving the world is crazy, u are adding to the problem. If u want to save the world, spend a couple of grand to improve the gas mileage of that gas hog instead of selling to someone who's going to keep getting bad mileage and putting another car on the road. Two wrongs don't make a right!!!!
