It was a campaign button with the words "Thanks, W" across the top and photos of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. beneath the letters.
Conservative legal activists view the two men as remarkable successes in Bush's quest to move the court to the right, and that is part of the reason that, as the court begins its work anew today, public attention is focused less on the cases at hand than on the court's future.
It is a future entirely dependent on whether Sen. John McCain or Sen. Barack Obama prevails in November.
"A President Obama or a President McCain will likely be handed an opportunity to affect the makeup of the Supreme Court that is unprecedented in our history," said Wendy Long, chief counsel for the Judicial Confirmation Network, which was active in generating public support for the confirmations of Roberts and Alito.....

I've heard all the arguments against McCain and I know all the arguments against Obama. This one screams louder than all of them, and it comes from the liberal Washington Post. Even if Obama is a one term-wonder that gets turned out after 4 years, the permanent, indelible, liberal stamp on the Supreme Court will change Court precedents that will last for generations.
The right to bear arms? A 5-4 decision. What type of Justice will Obama put on the Supreme Court... the Obama that distains, dismisses, and derides Middle America as clinging to their guns and religions. An individuals right to bear arms will evaporate, plain and simple. Think about what issues are important to you, and look at it.
The issues are broad, but all you need to do is go down all the 5-4 decisions of the last 5-10 years, and change two votes to a liberal court position, and you will have a small picture what the United States will look like for the next 50 years. Reread that quote above from the article, and let it sink in a minute. Think about what that really means. You can't undo that stuff by throwing the bums out and electing a new president after four years.
Obama has already told everyone that economic justice will be the hallmark of his administration. If you aren't aware of what that means, it's political speak for massive tax increases and redistribution of this country's wealth and resources through social programs. Free health care, free housing, free whatever. Civil War reparations? As ludicrous as that sounds, it will be on the table with Obama and the Democrats next year. All these liberal philosophies and programs , and more, will be reflected in Supreme Court biases and predispositions with Obama court appointees.
Too many on this forum, and around the country, don't understand the futileness of a "protest vote" and what it means. I can tell you if I was Obama, I'd toss a couple of million through proxy donors to Ron Paul, and Barr, and whoever might split off votes from McCain. It would seriously help his cause.
