Spend or Save?

I have been watching the morning talking heads and Chuckie Shumer from the great state of New York says that one of the cures for this economy is the govt to spend, spend, spend and dump money into this economy.

My thought is that if the government would save more money, balance their budget, and cut some uneeded spending, we would hurt in the short term but be so much better off in the long run.

Thoughts?
