ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- A leader of a national union urged Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Workers on Wednesday to band together to fight for their rights after 179 full-time employees were let go.
“In times like these, there are many, many ways to fight back,” said Bob Kingsley, the national director of organization for the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America. Earlier in the day before Kingsley’s presentation, Cummins workers distributed a sign-up sheet to workers to join the union.
Speaking to about 40 Cummins workers at the Bloomer Hill Community Center in Whitakers, union officials urged Cummins workers to stand up to the company. Kingsley showed a video of a fight of that union’s members in December, when the Chicago factory workers staged a sit-in at a window and door manufacturing plant. After being given notice that the plant was closing down in three days, employees refused to leave the cafeteria for several days, demanding severance and vacation pay.
After the case gained the attention of the national media and President Barack Obama, Republic Windows & Doors granted eight weeks salary and vacation pay to the workers.
“You share some things in common with them,” Kingsley said. “There are things that they did that you can do, too. They reached out to the community, and they asked political leaders to come join their cause.”
