What's the secret to getting exhaust apart?

Ok, here we go.. a while back (2 yrs ago) I bought a 4" Exhaust.. Now I have a muffler which I want to install, but I am having all hell trying to get the exhaust segments seperated, and do not want to go to an exhaust shop to get it done. I spent too much money for one of them to just whack it right off.. How do you get these exhaust segments seperated without damaging anything??
