egt probe confused

i have my egt guage to install..the probe install instructions tells me to drill a 7/16" hole into manifold and then tap with a 1/4" npt pipe tap...the probe has a sleeve that is i/2" that goes into the manifold first and the probe then screws down into the sleeve....should not the pipe tap be a 1/2' instead of 1/4??? it is a DiPricol guage from tst...any help with my confusion will be appreciated...thanks guys...
