FASS Location

OK, I've had the FASS on for a few weeks/2K miles, and I'm really concerned about it's vulnerability mounted in the prescribed location, under the bed in front of the driver's side rear wheel. The whole unit is filthy and gets wet routinely, and more disturbingly, the forward-facing side of the fuel filter has numerous little spots where the paint has been chipped away by road debris (probably highway salt). This is too expensive a piece to be treating this way, especially since the ONLY reason I bought it was to hopefully encrease the reliability of my truck.

Has anyone else had these concerns? I have the unit mounted as high as I dare given that the bed is soft-mounted (about 1/2" clearance), but with 2WD it's still pretty close to the ground (maybe the 4WD guys aren't seeing the paint chipping thing).

I'm getting the factory rear fender liners that my '02 didn't come with, and I'm looking into front mud flaps.
