Where's the B-1 Following? B-1s on Their Way Out?
Hey guys - I hope to spark some discussion about the B-1 line of turbos that aren't getting very much (if any) attention these days. I can't count one instance someone posting on here that they've ordered a B-1 in the past few months. The board is littered with posts about orders for HTB2s and Phat Shafts though.
Back when I joined the TDR in 2003, it seemed that if you had a B-1, you were top dog and were putting down some serious power. That's definitely not the case anymore. Even long time users of the B-1s are sending them to II and HTT to get them modified. This is really surprising to me.
I guess I'm wondering what happened to all the hype about these turbos. I know that the products from HTT and II are getting the attention right now, but does that mean that the B-1 is something of the past? Without knowing much about the technology behind these things, are B-1s surpassed in this area now? I guess price plays a role too. You can have a wastegated HTB2 and nearly a Phat Shaft for what a non-wastegated B-1 costs.
With my F1 cam and the new Smarty, I've been wanting to try a B-1 on Steroids really bad, but everyone seems to be trying to talk me out of it, basically like there are better options out there. Is the fabled B-1 Steroid now the equivalent of a Sled Puller 66 or a SPS 66? The only major news I've heard about it lately is the incredible numbers that JetPilot put down with it on his 24V. And I think even he is getting ready to try something else.
Any thoughts on this? Will anybody even remember the B-1 series in a few years, and are they being outdated by newer and better options?
