Temp sensor in a tcase? How to do it?

I want to install a temperature sensor in my NV271 tcase. My truck is a '93 Hummer with a 2003 Cummins/48Re/NV271 drivetrain and I offroad it quite a bit.

I was thinking of using the drain plug and I have a B&M drain plug but was unsure as to having it tapped or welded, since I think (not sure) that the drain plug has a hex head and is potmetal. Anybody done this? Is there a better way.
