Blackstone Question

For those members that use Blackstone, I got a question.
I got their pump and tried to get an oil sample.
I ran the tubing into the dipstick and it seemed to hit something at the bottom.
I did manage to get about 1/2 in of oil but thats all.
My question is would a smaller tube work?
Also, should the engine be at operating temp?
