Someone give me a polishing tutorial!

Ok, I"ve seen too many engine compartments that turn mine to shame so I'm ready to start polishing. Someone give me a rundown on all this. What is involved, what do you recommend polishing, what's not able to be polished, is it mostly done manually or by power? What needs to be jet-coated rather than polished? I'm all new to this, so treat me as a complete ignorant.

Any suggestions would be great, I'm ready to make mine shine!
