I was told his 3rd gear synchro died.

definately warranty, DC authorized a replacement transmission instead of trying to fix that mess.

23,000, you could see where the lining wore off the synchro. The synchro material apprears to be a sintered metal of some sort. It is actually pretty thick. He said it failed due to excessive end play that wore out the lining.

I make the assumption that it had it's original oil in it??

I've got 37,000 on mine and hate seeing one like this go. Makes me worry a bit.

Dont know it's maintenance history. From looking at the internals it seems to me the only way to kill one would be to set it up wrong in the beginning, it uses a myriad of shims to set preload, end play, etc. It is very strong looking, but it's weak link seems to be synchros and I saw one bushing that was scuffed, I think you can see it in one of the pictures. I'm glad I installed a filter on mine. That should catch the small abrasives.

Call Geno's. They have a filter setup which replaces the (pass) PTO cover on the tranny. I also added one of those super strenght magnets inside the filter.
