12 volts to trailer

This past weekend I hooked up the wiring for a fifth wheel trailer I should be getting this Friday. I noticed the 12 volt supply to the trailer is always hot. Is correct? This is my first Dodge, the Fords I had in the past only had the 12 volts when the ignition was on.
