12% Excise Tax Could Impact Fifth Wheel Tow Vehicles
Industry lobbyists are heading to Washington to seek exemption of trucks fitted with fifth wheel hitches and brake controls from a 12% excise tax the IRS says applies to trucks that pull fifth wheel RVs at the point of retail sale. For several years, the assumption was the tax applied only to vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings over 33,000 lbs. But the IRS issued a memorandum last July that indicates it considers smaller trucks that pull fifth wheels eligible for the tax, which could add $4200 to the price of a $35,000 truck used to pull a fifth wheel.
